Today I am going to show you how to start a blog in 3 simple steps.
After reading this article you will see by yourself that creating your own blog it’s not complicated as you thought.
Find Blogging Idea
Before you start, take your time to think about what you are going to blog for.
The easiest way to find your main topic is to take a look at yourself. What are your interests? What are your hobbies? Which is your field of expertise? If you are not quite sure, ask your friends to tell you what are your strengths and what do they think you are expert in.
Once you figure this out, write on a piece of paper the main things you are going to include inside your blog: what will be your main idea, possible products you are going to sale, think about the design of your blog. How would you like it to look?
All these things are essential and will help you later on with the project.
Keep in mind that blogging it’s not something you will set and forget. You have to think of it like a marathon, not a sprint. If you want to be truly successful at you blogging venture you need to hustle every day.
That’s why it’s best to pick a topic that you absolutely love. Something you are truly passionate about.
Don’t rush things up until you are not 100% sure that you are going to love what you do.
Domain – Hosting – WordPress
Once you’ve decided what you are going to blog about, let’s get a bit technical.
Each blog is an assembly by a domain name, hosting account and a CMS (Content Management System) – in our case this is WordPress.
The domain is what you type in the browser to open your website, the hosting is where your website files are stored and WordPress is what you are using to design and build your site.
In short, the steps for setting this up are the following:
Find Domain > Get Hosting > Install WordPress
Think of a suitable domain name that will correspond with your blogging idea > Signup for a hosting account account > and Install WordPress.
Find Suitable Domain
Finding a suitable domain name can be a bit complicated. The main reasons it’s because most of the good domains are already taken. You need to turn ON your creative thinking for this part:)
Try different combinations of words, synonyms, search in the dictionary for interesting words…
If after the research you are still not finding a good domain to go with, don’t give up, there is still hope. There are plenty of online tools that can help you with this daunting task. Access the sites below and see what I mean:
These online tools provide a simple way of finding great domains using keywords.
Once you’ve found the perfect domain for your new blog, don’t register it immediately. This can happen for free when purchasing a hosting account.
Get Quality Hosting
There are a lot of hosting provider out there, and most of them are providing pretty much the same service – at least that is the impression when you visit their sales pages. Still, there are a lot of differences, which are seen only if you have an account with these companies.
From the dozens of hosting solutions, I’ve found one that meets all expectations. The company I am talking about is called SiteGround hosting. You get 24/7 support, 99% uptime, easy one-click WordPress installation, backups, free domain name and more.
Also, as a reader of my site, you get up to %38 off the regular price when signing up for an account. You can use the link below to secure the domain for free and purchase hosting account:
Access your hosting account > Go to your cPanel > Find Softaculous:
Click on the install button and the following information:
- Choose Protocol – You have the option to choose from 4 different protocols. If your site has SSL, then make sure to select https:// or https://www. If not, choose from www. or non www. My personal advice will be to go without www.
- Choose Domain – Select for which domain you would like to install WordPress.
- In Directory – Leave that empty.
- Site Name/Description – Personalize your WordPress website by adding a name and a description. You can always change that later.
- Admin User/Pass – Important – Make sure to use a different user from admin and add a very strong password. Adding a strong password will protect your site from being hacked.
- Admin Email – Make sure to change the email here with one you have access to.
- Install – Start the installation of your WordPress by pressing the button.
Why WordPress? – you might ask.
This is the BEST platform for building a blog. It’s super advanced, user-friendly and powerful platform for starting a blog, making a website or an eCommerce site. More than 20% of all sites around the world are powered by WordPress – that’s a huge number, we are talking millions here.
Setup Your WordPress
Once everything is in place: domain, hosting, WordPress, it’s time to start setting things up.
Access your WordPress admin page, by typing wp-admin after your domain name:
The dashboard will show a bunch of items on the left side or the screen. It looks like this:
One of the first things you should do is to customize your permalinks. To do so, go to Settings > Permalinks > Choose custom structure > Add the following lines inside the empty field: /%category%/%postname%/
Why this is so important.
Changing the permalinks structure it’s essential for the SEO of your blog. Also, the URL tells your visitors what are they reading and on what page or post they are on.
Let’s proceed to the next step:
Installing WordPress Theme
These themes will change the default style of your WordPress blog and will also give you more functionality. They can be separated into two categories: free and premium.
As you probably already thought, the paid ones come with more available options, still, the free ones will be enough to start with.
Free WordPress Themes
Premium WordPress Themes
Additionally, you can search for suitable theme for your project in these theme markets:
Once you’ve found the theme you like, you can easily install it by clicking on Appearance > Themes > Add new. You can also check my detailed step-by-step tutorial about this: How to install WordPress theme
After installing it, in order to complete the design of your new blog, make your own logo and favicon for free using these steps:
Installing WordPress Plugins
Plugins add additional functions to your WordPress website. As with themes, there are also free and premium plugins available for installation.
You will be overwhelmed by the available plugins, they are hundreds, and all of them are promising to do the job, which of course you can’t know, without first testing them.
To save you time, I’ve found the best free plugins to start with. Here is the list:
- Akismet – Protect from spam
- Yoast SEO – SEO plugin
- WP Smush – Optimize images
- CaptainForm – Contact form plugin
- 404 to 301 redirect – No more 404 errors
- Google Analytics Dashboard for WP – Helpful statistics
- WP Super Cache – Caching plugin
- Loginizer – Protects you from brute force attacks
- MailMunch – Email capturing plugin
And here you can find detailed instructions on how to install these must have WordPress plugins.
I will personally suggest going with free plugins and once you have more visits and your project expands, than you can replace them with more premium solution.
Add Categories and Write Posts
Ok, you have the basics, it’s time to show you how to actually start blogging.
Of course, since you are starting a blog writing articles will be your main thing, but before you actually put pen on paper, so to say, it’s best to think ahead and organize your things from the start.
Go to Posts > Categories:
Adding different categories will help you structure your blog and also help you keep things more organized.
Name your category and add short a describtion.
Once this is done, you can start writing you first blog post. To do so, simply go to Posts > Add new:
Add a title, choose your category and of course, start writing.
Use the tools in the toolbar to make your post even more engaging: add headings, bullet lists, media files, numbers.
These things will make your post more readable and it’s more likely the people reading it to reach the bottom, share it or purchase what you are selling.
You wrote your first post, let’s see how we can add cool navigation inside your blog.
Add Menu Inside Your WordPress Blog
After you have your posts and pages, we need to make sure that other people can also see them. This is done by adding navigation inside your blog.
Head to Appearance > Menus > Give your menu a name > Create the Menu:
Your menu is created and now is left to populate it with different items. Add links, pages, categories and arrange them the way you want:
You are all set.
Now people can go through your WordPress blog and read your articles.
Bonus step: Repeat and Optimize
No, it doesn’t end here!
If you followed the steps above you already know how to make your own blog. But as I mentioned in the beginning, this is not something you will set and forget.
Your blog requires constant care and attention.
To become a successful blogger, you will need to constantly produce high-quality content which helps your visitors in the topic you write about. Even though writing articles takes a lot of time, I have some guidance on how to write the perfect WordPress article faster.
Besides writing articles regularly, you will also need to constantly optimize your blog performance. Use caching plugins, get WordPress optimized hosting and more.
See how easy it is!
The most important things when starting your own blog are your idea and the commitment to that idea.
You need to be sure that people will want what your offer. Whether this will be reading your articles, purchasing your products or subscribing to your email list.
People want things that will save them time, money and will ease their everyday life. If you give them that, they will follow you and buy from you.
Of course, like everything in life, you can’t sustain something if you are not doing the needed work. When starting your own blog you should know that this is a long-term commitment.
